Reccord encourages employees, announces review plan

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP)–During a “family chat” with some 200 North American Mission Board employees on Feb. 22, North American Mission Board President Robert E. (Bob) Reccord advised employees to “keep your heads high, stay on task, pray a lot and reflect Christ in everything you do.”

The hour-long session in NAMB’s auditorium was in response to a front-page, unsourced article in The Christian Index, the official newspaper of the Georgia Baptist Convention. The story criticized NAMB’s effectiveness in increasing Southern Baptist baptisms and church starts.

To address the issues raised by the Index, Reccord announced several specific actions to ensure that NAMB and its leadership are and remain above reproach:

— At Reccord’s request, NAMB trustee chairman Barry Holcomb has appointed a task force of trustees -– comprised mainly of the board’s executive committee members -– to review all the issues raised in the article. The task force is beginning its work this week at NAMB’s offices north of Atlanta and will report back to the entire trustee board with a fully documented and detailed study.

— Reccord contracted the services of the national independent auditing firm of Capin and Crouse to conduct a thorough audit of issues addressed in the article. Capin and Crouse -– which has performed audits for nonprofits like Campus Crusade for Christ and Focus on the Family -– already has begun the review and will provide a detailed report of its findings to NAMB’s full board of trustees.

— And, in cooperation with the trustee officers, Reccord has called for a special meeting of the full board of trustees on March 23 to review and discuss the findings of both the task force and the special audit.

Chuck Allen, NAMB’s chief operating officer, told the NAMB employees, “This could be our finest hour.

“Dr. Reccord and I want you to take the high road and God will lead us through this. We pray that God will use this situation to make NAMB and our churches even better and stronger,” Allen said. “We want all of you to continue your focus on assisting our churches with evangelism, church planting and reaching North America for Christ.”
