Baptist Press launches column with focus on evangelism

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Highlighting the denomination-wide focus on sharing the Gospel, Baptist Press is beginning a weekly column today, June 7, highlighting the role of evangelism in the Christian life. Columns will run on Tuesdays.

John Avant, vice-president of evangelization at the North American Mission Board, will be the lead columnist. Also contributing will be seminary professors, other denominational employees and church leaders from throughout the Southern Baptist Convention.

“Dr. Avant’s passion for the lost was at the heart of the great revival of 1995 that swept across more than 100 college campuses after igniting at his former church, Coggin Avenue Baptist Church in Brownwood, Texas,” said Will Hall, executive editor of Baptist Press and vice president for news services with the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee. “It is an honor for Baptist Press to serve as a medium for him to further influence Southern Baptists to reach the world for Christ. Our readers will be blessed.”

Avant currently serves as a member of the SBC’s Empowering Kingdom Growth Task Force. He has served as an adjunct professor at Criswell College and Oklahoma Baptist University as well as a teaching fellow at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has preached and led conferences across North America and around the world and is the author of several books. He and his wife, Donna, have two daughters and one son at home.
