Baptist couple’s children die in crash at Lebanon-Syria border


FORT WORTH, Texas (BP)–Two children of a Southern Baptist couple stationed in the Middle East were killed in an automobile accident at the Lebanon-Syria border Nov. 28.

The two children of Charles and Laurie McKenzie — Samuel, 7, and Abigail, 4 – died when the brakes of a Jordanian truck failed and it slammed into the minibus in which the family was waiting to cross the border. Also killed was McKenzie’s mother, Patsy, who was visiting the family in the region. According to a report by United Press International, two Jordanians also were killed in another car hit by the truck.

The condition of Charles and Laurie McKenzie was not available at press time.

McKenzie, a native of Germantown, Tenn., is an English teacher in the Middle East; according to the UPI, McKenzie was teaching in a school in the northern Lebanese port city of Tripoli.

He is a 1990 master of divinity graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and a 1986 graduate of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark.

No further details of the accident were available at press time.
