Union Univ. volleyball standout in Athens for Kenyan homeland


ATHENS (BP)–Union University senior standout Gladys Wandera is playing volleyball in the Summer Olympics — her second straight Olympic Games as a member of the Kenya national volleyball team.

Wandera, a 6-foot-2 middle hitter for the Lady Bulldogs is from Kakamega, Kenya.

As a junior at Union last season, Wandera was named TranSouth Player of the Year and NAIA Region XI Player of the Year, along with being selected as an NAIA All-American.

She was named as the conference player of the week five times, region player of the week three times and NAIA national player of the week twice during the season. Wandera led Union in kills (905), kills per game (5.69) and attack percentage (.518).

The Kenyan team opened Aug. 14 with a loss to Greece in three sets. 25-7, 25-22 and 25-14.

The Kenyans are scheduled to play Brazil on Aug. 16; Italy, Aug. 18; and Japan, Aug. 22.

Wandera, who is listed on the team by the name of Gladys Nasikanda, is one of three Kenyan players currently playing college volleyball for American schools. The others are Phelister Chebet of Indian Hills Junior College and Roselida Obunaga of Central Methodist.
