Christian Citizenship Week slated at Midwestern Seminary

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP)–As Election Day 2004 approaches, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary has dedicated the week of Aug. 17 as Christian Citizenship Week to emphasize the Christian’s responsibility to participate in and support America’s democratic government.

“Christians across America have the privilege and responsibility to participate in the electoral process of our government,” said R. Philip Roberts, president of MBTS. “Prayerfully, this week will remind us, as Christian leaders, to be good stewards of what we have been given in this country, as well as to be obedient to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Highlighting the week will be special guest speakers Richard Land and Richard Wells in special chapel services Aug. 17 and Aug. 18, respectively, at the Kansas City, Mo., campus.

Land is president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission and a nationally syndicated radio show host.

“Dr. Land is well-known not only in Christian circles but throughout the United States from his weekly radio show,” Roberts said. “We are pleased to welcome him and [the ERLC] iVoteValues.com campaign to the Midwestern campus as he travels across the country urging Americans to be registered and to vote according to their beliefs and convictions.”

As part of Land’s visit, he will be bringing a special 77-foot mobile voter registration trailer which includes computerized voter registration, multimedia screens, kid’s games and nonpartisan voter information on values-based voting. The tractor-trailer is part of the ERLC’s iVoteValues.com campaign to encourage Americans to vote according to their values, rather than just their wallet or their political party.

Wells, senior pastor of South Canyon Baptist Church in Rapid City, S.D., is a former president of Criswell College in Dallas.
