LifeWay’s Gene Mims plans return to pastoral ministry

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Gene Mims, vice president of the church resources division of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention, has announced his desire to return to pastoral ministry.

“I have worked through this process carefully for the past year and have prayerfully concluded that this is the time when I should pursue whatever opportunities God may have in store for my wife and me,” Mims said.

No interim or successor has been named.

Mims accepted the vice presidential position at LifeWay in December 1991. At that time he was pastor of First Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tenn., and had served as a LifeWay trustee since 1984. Mims has served as pastor of churches in Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama and Texas.

A prolific author, Mims has written a number of books and study materials on church growth and church practice. His titles include “The Kingdom Focused Church,” “The Kingdom Focused Leader,” “Kingdom Principles for Church Growth” and “The Seven Churches Not in the Book of Revelation.”

“When I came to LifeWay 13 years ago, I asked Gene to come on board,” said James T. Draper Jr., president of LifeWay. “We’ve had a shared passion for the local church and LifeWay has been blessed by Gene’s leadership throughout these many years. As a pastor myself, I understand Gene’s longing to return to a local church ministry.”

A native of Mississippi, Mims received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and his master of divinity and doctor of ministry degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

“Gene’s 12-plus years here at LifeWay have been blessed,” said Ted Warren, LifeWay’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “He has given strategic leadership to the heart and soul of LifeWay’s ministry to churches through the church resources division.”

Mims and his wife, Ann, have two adult children, Jeff and Marianne.

“Ann and I are excited about what the Lord is doing in our lives and anticipate great things ahead,” Mims said.
