Yeats to be nominated for another term as recording secretary

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (BP)–John L. Yeats will be nominated for another term as recording secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention, Jon Groves, associate pastor of Living Word Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff, Mo., announced June 1.

As the SBC’s recording secretary, Yeats is responsible for the recording of the proceedings and final editing of the SBC Annual and the SBC Book of Reports. He was first elected to the position in 1997.

Yeats is the editor of the Baptist Messenger, newsjournal of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, and former editor of the Indiana Baptist of the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana.

From 1991-95, he was pastor of the South Park Baptist Church in Grand Prairie, Texas, where Groves was a member.

“It is a great privilege for me to nominate John for the position of recording secretary,” Groves said. “As pastor, he has demonstrated unswerving integrity. As a mentor, he has deposited his godly wisdom and encouragement into the lives of younger pastors. John’s meticulous attention to the duties of recording secretary is both admirable and necessary. For the past six years, John has brought creativity and energy to the position. Southern Baptists have been, and continue to be, blessed by the service of John Yeats.”

As part of his responsibilities as recording secretary, Yeats serves on the SBC Executive Committee and is the current chairman of the audit workgroup. He also is a former at-large commissioner with the SBC Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission and a former SBC Resolutions Committee member.

Yeats has served churches in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Montana.
