ATLANTA (BP)–A Southern Baptist youth periodical — Go! — received an Award of Excellence during the Evangelical Press Association’s May 4-7 annual meeting in Atlanta.
The Awards of Excellence contest looks at the entire publication and is broken down by category with awards offered in each category. This competition does not have a category for online publications.
Go!, published by the North American Mission Board, emerged atop the Youth category that included Award of Merit honors for Breakaway, published by Focus on the Family, and Campus Life, published by Christianity Today.
Go! is edited by Janna Jones; Aaron Cessna is the magazine’s art director.
In other categories from the Evangelical Press Association’s Awards of Excellence:
— Christian Single received an Award of Merit in the “General” category. Moody Magazine received the Award of Excellence, while Books & Culture, published by Christianity Today, and Sports Spectrum joined Christian Single as Award of Merit recipients. Christian Single is published by LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention.
— The Alabama Baptist received an Award of Merit in the Newspaper category. Indian Life, published by Intertribal Christian Communications, received the Award of Excellence, while Inside Journal, published by Prison Fellowship, and Living Light News joined The Alabama Baptist as Award of Merit recipients.
In the Evangelical Press Association’s Higher Goals competition, which is open to both print and online publications, Go! magazine, received the first place award in the Fiction category for “Light and Shadow” by Nicole Phinney.
Baptist Press received a third place award in the Biblical Exposition category for a column by Russell D. Moore, assistant professor of Christian theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and executive director of the seminary’s Carl F. H. Henry Institute for Evangelical Engagement. Moore’s column was titled, “Joseph of Nazareth Meets Planned Parenthood.”
Other Higher Goals winners included:
— The Alabama Baptist, third place in the First-Person Article category for an editorial by editor Bob Terry titled, “Reflections on Romans 8:28.” Christian Single placed fifth for an article by Janice Whipple and Kelly Tolson Lotochinski titled, “The Long and Winding Road.”
— Go! magazine, fourth place in the Publication Design category.
— On Mission, the flagship publication of the North American Mission Board, fourth place in the Single-Theme Section/Issue category for articles on postmodernism.
— On Mission, fifth place in the Evangelistic Article category for an article by Mark Littleton titled, “When God Calls.”
