‘Run for the Son’ walk for wellness slated by Annuity Board for Phoenix

DALLAS (BP)–A “Run for the Son” walk for wellness will be sponsored by the Annuity Board of the Southern Baptist Convention June 17 during the SBC annual meeting in Phoenix.

The “Run for the Son,” slated to begin at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, will follow a one-mile course around the Phoenix Civic Plaza. Participation will be limited to 750 walkers.

The first 500 registered walkers will receive a free “Run for the Son” T-shirt. Healthful refreshments will be served to all participants at the end of the walk.

“The purpose of the ‘Run for the Son’ walk is to demonstrate the Annuity Board’s ongoing commitment to wellness,” said Annuity Board President O.S. Hawkins. “We want Southern Baptists to see us as walking advocates for wellness.”

In 2002, the Annuity Board began a pilot wellness program with the Tennessee Baptist Convention (TBC). Over the past year, Annuity Board and TBC employees have participated in several activities designed to educate and promote a healthy lifestyle. Several other state conventions will be joining the program in 2003.

In support of the wellness initiative, the companies that provide services for the Annuity Board’s life and health products are co-sponsoring the walk. The four companies providing financial support are the Principal Financial Group, Unum Life Insurance Company of America, Medco Health Solutions and Fortis Benefits Insurance Company.

“With medical costs consistently on the rise over the last several years, the Annuity Board is encouraging its employees and Southern Baptists across the country to take more responsibility for their own health,” said Doug Day, executive officer of benefit services at the SBC entity.

“Americans have to get out of the mindset that somebody else should be responsible for their medical expenses. By living a healthy lifestyle and making informed choices, each of us can make an impact,” Day said.

Anyone interested in participating in the “Run for the Son” walk for wellness should contact the Annuity Board at 1-800-262-0511 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Registration forms for the walk will be available in March.
