Alternatives for Life aids Baptists on front lines of abortion battle

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP)–A byproduct of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision has been the rise of pregnancy care centers, local Christian ministries dedicated to helping prevent abortions through counseling and practical assistance. One of the best resources for Southern Baptist churches and individuals interested in helping start and operate such centers is the North American Mission Board’s Alternatives for Life Ministries.

A total of 99 autonomous pregnancy care centers currently are affiliated with Alternatives for Life in a relationship similar to the way churches affiliate with the Southern Baptist Convention.

Among the resources available through NAMB are guidance on how to establish a pregnancy care center, leadership training through workshops and conferences, manuals for directors and volunteers, evangelistic training, free Bibles for use with clients, evangelistic tracts, individual consulting and other resources. Alternatives for Life also has relationships with a variety of organizations with common goals that provide complementary resources.

Lane Davis, who works with Alternatives for Life as part of NAMB’s ministry evangelism team, said she routinely takes calls from churches and individuals who want to know what is involved in operating a center.

“We offer a packet of materials to get them started that tells them what they need to do in order to start a pregnancy care center,” she said. “And it tells them exactly what NAMB can do for them.”

A primary focus of the NAMB resources is on providing spiritual counseling — including sharing with clients how they can experience a life-changing relationship with Christ if they have not already done so.

Center directors and other workers often also are eligible for certification as NAMB Mission Service Corps missionaries, Davis said. The program provides resources and assistance for missionaries who are self-funded or receive financial support through other means.
