Golden Gate Seminary adds profs in youth ministry, Old Testament

SAN FRANCISCO (BP)–Karen Jones and Gregg Watson have joined the faculty of the Mill Valley campus of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary as new professors of Christian education and Old Testament studies, respectively.

Jones was most recently assistant professor of educational ministries at Huntington College, Huntington, Ind., and associate director of Link Institute for Faithful and Effective Youth Ministry. She has served in youth and student ministries in local churches and has written extensively for various Southern Baptist and other youth ministry publications.

Jones earned both her doctor of philosophy in educational ministries and her master of arts in religious education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas.

She coauthored a book, “Youth Ministry That Transforms,” based on Link Institute’s study of Protestant youth ministers in America, and published by Zondervan/Youth Specialties.

“Karen Jones has focused much of her research, writing and ministry in the area of youth and student ministry,” said Rick Durst, vice president for academic affairs at Golden Gate Seminary. “She will enable Golden Gate to become one of the premier training places for those leading student ministries in the 21st century.”

Jones and her husband Dennis have two sons.

Watson, since 1995, has been a teaching fellow at Southwestern Seminary, where he earned both his doctor of philosophy in Old Testament and master of divinity degrees. He has also served as pastor of Brandon (Texas) Baptist Church since 1993.

Watson was an Old Testament translator for the recently released Holman Christian Standard Bible translation and he has served with the World Bible Translation Center.

“When students study with contemporary Bible translators like Dr. Watson, they are empowered to be extraordinary lovers of the text and interpreters of the Word,” Durst said.

Watson and his wife Kimberly Lynn have two sons.
