Charlie Harvey named VP at New Orleans Seminary

NEW ORLEANS (BP)–Charles Harvey Jr., director of the doctor of ministry program and associate professor of Christian education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, has been promoted to vice president of development. Harvey succeeds Jerry Pounds, who has taken a position as president of Truett-McConnell College in Georgia.

“It is difficult to imagine anyone who would do a better job of telling the NOBTS story than Dr. Charles Harvey Jr.,” NOBTS President Chuck Kelley said. “He has a powerful ministry in local churches and on college campuses. As a faculty member he helped me develop several innovative programs.”

The president added, “Dr. Harvey has a great love the Lord, for people and for this school. God has perfectly prepared him for this role.”

A specialist in collegiate ministry, Harvey, 51, has served a variety of positions at the seminary since 1997. Most recently as associate director of the professional doctoral program, Harvey has been the director of theological education in a joint partnership between the Florida Baptist Convention, NOBTS and The Baptist College of Florida for the last three years. Previously, he served as director of continuing education and conference planning at the seminary.

In addition, Harvey was associate pastor/minister of education at First Baptist Church in Windermere, Fla., from 1990-97; Baptist Collegiate Ministries director at Louisiana State University at Eunice, LSU-Alexandria, and Northeast Louisiana University (now the University of Louisiana at Monroe) from 1980-90; and associate pastor/minister of education and administration at Ridge Avenue Baptist Church in West Monroe, La., 1977-80.

A native of Shreveport, La., Harvey earned both the master of divinity and doctor of ministry degrees from NOBTS, in 1977 and 1987, and the bachelor of arts degree from Northeast Louisiana University in 1974.

He is the son of Charles and Ethelene Harvey. His father, who died on April 14 of this year, was a Louisiana pastor for many years who also served as director of evangelism for the Louisiana Baptist Convention and as a professor of evangelism at NOBTS.

Harvey is married to the former Barbara Richardson of New Orleans, daughter of retired Louisiana pastor Robert Richardson.

Jimmy Dukes, dean of NOBTS’ extension center system and director of the North Georgia Campus, said he is “encouraged to see Charlie taking on the responsibility of the Development Office. His personality and energy will prove helpful in continuing to make friends for the seminary.

“In addition, Charlie is a product of NOBTS. He will be a super representative for us,” Dukes said.
