Students invited to join satellite abstinence rallies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)–Students around the country are being invited to gather in person or by satellite at Wedgwood Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, on Wednesday, Feb. 13, to celebrate their commitment to remain sexually pure until marriage. The event, which will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. CST, will be rebroadcast at 9 p.m. CST.

In its latest national celebration, True Love Waits, the sexual abstinence movement begun by Southern Baptists and sponsored by LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention, is inviting teenagers and college students to join in satellite rallies across North America.

“This will be an incredible night that I think every student will want to attend, said Richard Ross, youth ministry professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, and one of the founders of the True Love Waits campaign. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and through the use of satellite technology, anyone in North America will have an opportunity to join us.”

The one-hour nationally televised event will be hosted by the brother-sister duo of Phillip and Natalie LaRue, Christian artists who have consistently taken a stand for sexual purity. The event will also feature the new Christian band, Phat Chance.

The broadcast will feature an interactive online commitment form, along with scrolling e-mails at the bottom of the screen. Those taking part in the event will be able to send and read student online commitments and testimonies of faith and purity.

“True Love Waits: Seize the Net Goes Live provides an excellent opportunity for students to join forces to lift the banner for sexual purity,” said Jimmy Hester, coordinator of the event for LifeWay. “Airing the rally on Wednesday night gives local church groups a top-notch program they can use to reach students in their churches and communities.”

Churches wanting to tune into the broadcast will need satellite equipment. For continued updates on transmission/reception instructions, visit the True Love Waits website at www.truelovewaits.com. To help spread the message of the broadcast, e-mail [email protected] or call (800) LUV-WAIT.
