Senate approves assembly on Day of Reconciliation

WASHINGTON (BP)–The U.S. Senate has adopted a resolution establishing a National Day of Reconciliation to be observed with an event in the Capitol shortly after Thanksgiving.

Senators approved without dissent Nov. 13 a measure authorizing an assembly Nov. 27 or Dec. 4 at which members of the Senate and House of Representatives “may gather to humbly seek the blessings of Providence for forgiveness, reconciliation, unity and charity for all people of the United States.” The chaplains of both houses are to participate, according to Senate Concurrent Resolution 83.

The House approved a similar resolution in October. There is a primary difference in the versions. The Senate resolution authorizes the assembly to be held in the Capitol rotunda, while the House version provides for the voluntary meeting of senators and representatives to be held in the House chamber. The original version of the Senate measure also called for the assembly to be in the House. Sen. Sam Brownback, R.-Kan., was the chief sponsor of both Senate versions.

“It is my hope that through this we will be able to seek God’s guidance in the days that lay ahead and continue to reconcile our nation as we confront the war on terrorism,” Brownback said in a written statement.
